For those interested in what this is about - the goal is to find the name Womack in some document earlier than the first known mention - which as far as I know is the 1672 land grant.
I've been trotting through the pre-1700 Library of VA land grants for families known to be either related to the Womacks or living near them. The original land grant index often only mentioned the grantee and the first boundry, or the headrights, but not all of the boundry neighbors - so reading the old grants occasionally turns up someone as a neighbor. The Library of VA has been updating and upgrading their indexing system. It now searches on all mentioned names. And instead of a big list, it's an interactive search index now, alot nicer than the old one. Sadly, according to the new index there are no mentions of the Womacks earlier than the one for Richard's land grant.
In mid 2003, Doris pointed out the Jones Land Grant, and additional searching popped up the Hay one. The Woym'ke name was not indexed in any of the Lib of VA indexes, but Homack was listed in the new big index.
I'm still looking, as it's possible that additional things may simply listed under some variation that I haven't tried, but it's growing less likely that we'll find a new mention in the land grants. So far no mention has been Colonial Records Database, either. If anyone spots one, yell. |
